This morning I went to pick up my oldest (he has visitation with his father every other weekend) and on our way home we went to the recycling bins to drop off some stuff. I noticed his hair looked a little different but I thought maybe it was because it was early in the morning. I just figured maybe he hadn't brushed it yet, but when we arrived home my husband asked me if he got a haircut. I made him turn around so I could examine the back of his hair and lo and behold my child was given a haircut. A very bad haircut. I asked him who did this and he got emotional and wouldn't tell me. So we began a guessing game. Did you get gum in it? Did you cut it? Did your little brother cut it? I really just wanted to know why he had a large section of hair missing from his head. When he wouldn't tell me the specifics I picked up the phone and called his father to see what was going on. It turns out that his mormon grandparents make fun of his shaggy haircut on a regular basis and they tried to bribe him into getting it hacked up. I do emphasize the fact that they are mormon because it seems that being mormon means you have to look like clones with perfectly styled coiffures and starched white shirts and you cannot possibly have your own personality! Lord forbid you have a mind of your own...
Anyhow, it seems the grandparents used their mormon techniques on my son because they do not like his hair being long. The story is that they would only let him swim in their pool if he let them cut his hair. How childish is this? Now I have to take my son and fix this crap they call a hair cut. They better just watch out or I may have to dye his hair purple.

Dreaming of the Beach
Two years ago we were preparing for a family vacation to Kauai. I was two months pregnant, had a 17 month old and a 7 year old and both children had never been on a plane. Thankfully my parents rack up the frequent flyer miles and this allows us to get free tickets quite often. We decided to get our 17 month old her own seat and this turned out to be a wonderful idea, especially when I saw fellow passengers trying to hold their kids (of or around the same age) on their laps for 6 1/2 hours. I felt sorry for them actually and happy that my children weren't misbehaving. Whew!
Anyhow, I have been missing Hawaii lately and looking at photos from the trip two summers ago. Today I will fill this post with pictures that remind me of that very wonderful vacation.
Her first dip in the ocean. it was a little cold that day.
My boy found a good tree for climbing.
The beach nearest to the condos where we stayed. It was a very short walk from our room.
One of the many gorgeous views in Kauai. We were both really tired that day.
He didn't quite get the gist of how to wear the mask properly. But now we have this photo to tease him forever!
He really wanted a ukulele. We still have it and it still gets played two years later.
She got a hula skirt and didn't have any trouble figuring out the native dance.
Husband and son posing graciously for a photo.
Hopefully in a few years we will make it back there again. My husband and I fell in love with the island when we spent our honeymoon there. For now I will have to rely on these pictures to take me back there...in my mind.
